General Introduction of Center for Southeast Asian Studies    

     

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies was established in September 2000 based on the Research School for Southeast Asian StudiesXiamen University which was founded in 1956 as the Academy of Southeast Asian Studies, and it is one of the new China's earliest research institution on Southeast Asian, Overseas Chinese and International affairs studies. The institute devotes itself to the studies of polities, economy and history of Southeast Asian countries, and issues concerning overseas Chinese. In 1996 the academy was re-organized into research school and became a sub-organization of the national "211 Project" subsequently. In 2004, it’s elected to the National Research Center for the "985 Project" Philosophy and Social Science Innovation Base.

During the initial decade, great achievements were made especially in the research on overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia. With painstaking efforts in field study and extensive interviews with returned overseas Chinese, substantial materials on overseas Chinese investment in the mainland and Chinese contract workers in Southeast Asia were collected. During the Cultural Revolution period, the Institute was closed until 1972 when it resumed running.

The center has four research sections. The Institute for Studies of Politics and Economy in Southeast Asia puts its stress on political, economic and social issues in Southeast Asia, as well as economies in the Asian-Pacific region and developing countries. The Institute of Overseas Chinese Studies concentrates on the history and perspectives of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia. The main interest of the Center of History of China's International Relations lies in the history of relations between China and Southeast Asia and the history of Southeast Asia and South China Seas. And the research section of history, culture and religion in Southeast Asia.. Besides, there are STUDIES OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN AFFAIRS and SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES (A QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF TRANSLATIONS) editorial department, the library and the administrative office. In terms of degree programs, the research school offers, at present, three Ph. D programs (History of relations between China and Southeast Asia, economy of Southeast Asia, and international relations), 6 concentrations at the Master's degree level: ASEAN Economies, Development Economics, History of Southeast Asia, History of relations between China and Southeast Asia, History of Overseas Chinese and international relations of Southeast Asia, 2 bachelor’s degree(International Politics and Diplomacy), 1 subproject in the national "211 Project", 1 Philosophy and Social Science Innovation Base in the "985 Project", and 1 provincial priority discipline. The Institute of Malaysia studies, established in Dec.2004, is the corresponding to the China Research Institute, University of Malaya under the suggestion of Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi. Established in Mar. 2008, the Saw Centre of Southeast Asia studies was sponsored by Professor Surui Fu of National University of Singapore.

The center includes 18 researchers, 9 are full-time and 9 are part-time. All of them have got doctoral degrees; 14 are professor, accounting for 77.8%. To September 2011, there are 157 undergraduates, 151 graduate students, including 95 graduate students, 56 doctoral students (17 foreign students, 36 international masters).Now, the Director of the Center: Prof. Wang QinVice-director: Prof. Liao Dake and Prof. Li Yiping.

In recent years, the center has been conscientiously implementing the " Regulations on Universities’ Priority Social Sciences Research Bases " issued by the Ministry of Education, Following the priority research base standards, the center working hard, pursuing proactive and innovative, have made progresses in scientific research, personnel training, academic exchanges, information building, consulting services and scientific research system reform. In 2004, the center got A in three-year evaluation on priority social science research bases organized by the Ministry of Education.

In “11th five year plan” period(2006-2010), adhering to discipline-constructing orientation, the center combined basic research and applied research, targeted at finishing the major research project of the priority social science research base, and strived to make a number of academic outcomes with international influence. In the past 5 years, the Centre undertook 35 research programs as the leading person, 32 of them are provincial level or above, 3 are international cooperation projects. Besides, there are more than 30 academic monographs and translated works (as lead author), over 200 published papers, over 100 of them are published in CSSCI. It also obtained 9 provincial level and above outstanding social science achievements as well as outstanding teaching awards, training programs for government officials and staff, and provided advisory services to various government departments such as Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Department, Ministry of Commerce. Since 2002, the center began to publish Xiamen University Center for Southeast Asian Studies book series, which is a landmark achievement on Southeast Asia studies. The book series consist of 3 parts: 1)Southeast Asia and Overseas Chinese Studies, 2)translated works of Classics on Southeast Asia Studies, and 3)files and data.

In recent years, the center actively implemented international strategy, expanding foreign academic exchanges. Each year, the centre received dozens of international scholars, including those who are well-known in the field of international issues and Southeast Asian Studies; large-scale international academic conferences, dozens of seminars also been hold; Both teachers and researchers would do field research in Southeast Asia for a month or more, and publishing over 10 papers in foreign countries. Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi • Ministry, Higher Education Minister, and Minister of Housing and Local Government Center had visited.

The center possesses advanced research and teaching facilities, being generally considered to have the best collection on Southeast Asia and overseas Chinese affairs in China. The separate library has accumulated an extensive collection of 53,000 volumes of books, 10,000 monographs on special subjects, 20,000 bound periodicals and 25,000 bound newspapers. The list of subscriptions to foreign periodicals and newspapers has a total of 750 titles. The library has published a Combined Bibliography of the Books on Issues of Overseas and Ethnic Chinese in Fujian, four Title Indexes to the Papers on Southeast Asian Studies and overseas Chinese.    

   The center publishes two quarterly journals: STUDIES OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN AFFAIRS and SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES (A QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF TRANSLATIONS). The former published since 1974 carries articles written by the researchers in and beyond the School, while the latter published since 1957 carries translated foreign theses and systematic materials on Southeast Asia, Asian-Pacific economies, the economies of developing countries and the overseas Chinese affairs. Meanwhile, teaching laboratories and multimedia classrooms also been built, so did an English academic website (http://nanyang.xmu.edu.cn) on Southeast Asian Studies and Southeast Asian Studies database.

Emphasizing on institutional innovation, the centre has formed a new research system by establishing director responsibility system, stationed research system and study groups, reforming researchers’ appointment and the internal distribution system. In order to establish effective research management system and incentive mechanism, the centre drafted a series of administrative regulations such as Assessment and incentive methods on research work volume, Provisions on providing funds for research projects, Provisions on encouraging researchers to participate academic conferences in the past five years.

     

In the 12th five year plan, guided by the Concept of scientific development, following the standards of priority social science research bases, the center has been always clarifying strategic objectives, prioritizing development points, stimulating disciplinary integration, encouraging academic innovation and improving research qualities. Targeting to be a world-class research institute on Southeast Asia studies, the centre focuses on national development and its primary needs, keeping up with the forefront of Southeast Asian Studies, sticking to a combination of basic and applied research, studying and teaching, establishing academic projects both for the national development and discipline construction, strengthening dominant position and features on Southeast Asian studies, insistently increasing the overall power and international competitiveness of research.
