Program Objectives

This Program aims to train high level international professionals with a solid foundation in International Relations theory and thorough understanding of international affairs, especially Asia-Pacific international affairs. It is expected that graduates of the program will have capability to apply for positions in diplomatic organizations, multi-national companies, government departments or teaching and research institutes with an interest in the international affairs.
All courses are lectured in English, aim to train high level professionals majored in international relations with a good foundation and understanding of Chinese society and culture.
This Program helps to promote the progress of international education in our university, facilitates international cooperation and communication of the teachers and students, and enhances the friendship between the Chinese people and the peoples of the world.

Requirements of Research Ability and Other Aspects

Masters: Our department encourages students to do research positively, but academic paper isn’t compulsory when apply for degree.

 

PHDs: PHDs should publish at least 2 academic research papers, which are more than 3000 words respectively. Moreover, graduates should be the lead author of them and Xiamen University should be located as the first sign unit. While, if the supervisor is the first author and the graduate is the second, this paper is also approved. And, the related textbook (more than 50,000 words) or the related monograph (more than 30,000) words can also be considered as one academic research paper. Concerning the qualification of journal, both of CSSCI national journals and any international journal are accepted. Specifically, in terms of national journal, a publication on SCIEI SSC can be considered as two CSSCI paper

Requirements for master thesis proposal:

1. Preparation. The thesis title shall be confirmed under the supervisor’s guidance prior to the end of the second semester, the first academic year and the documents shall started be collected, so is other preparation work.

2. Thesis proposal. The thesis proposal should be completed and submitted, under the supervisor’s guidance, prior to the 3rd semester, the first academic year. The title and structure shall be confirmed under the examination comments of supervisor team or teaching and research office.

Requirements for doctoral thesis proposal:

1. Topic selection. The thesis title shall be confirmed, under the supervisor’s guidance, and the relevant document review shall be completed.

2. Thesis proposal. The Ph.D candidates shall complete the thesis proposal in the 1st semester of the 2nd academic year under the supervisor’s examination, which should include:  1. The title selection scope; 2. Research objective, meaning, the academic or practice problem to be settled in the thesis and the expected innovative points and its scientific value. 3. Academic thought (guiding thought, methodology and main theme of the thesis, argument basis, problems to be settled). 4. The existing document and other information in this subject. 5. The current problem or challenges. 6. Writing plan, including the time management of survey, outline, preliminary draft, final draft and printing.

The social practice identification form and practice report shall be submitted with no words limitation.

Teaching Practice

 

 Master candidates shall participate in the teaching activities relevant to the subject under the arrangement and guidance of their supervisors and teaching and research office, including teaching some chapters of undergraduates/junior college students courses, assisting professors in class discussion, papers check, tutoring and other teaching assistance work, and the social investigation conducted by teaching and research office or supervisor team.

Thesis

Basic requirements for thesise.g., academic quality of the thesis

Masters: Students should choose thesis title under supervisor’s guidance. The thesis can be special research or high-quality report on investigation. Students should finish thesis in one year on the basis of collecting data and doing investigation. The thesis can be written in English, but it must contain the Chinese abstract. It also should be reviewed according to our university’s rules. The thesis for the graduate students should manifest his academic abilities for research and practice, which means: 1) the topic being of valuable in academic research or practice2.)creative opinions or researching methods; 3) reasonable structures, good logic and persuasion; 4) concrete materials; 5) good forms; 6) more than 30,000 words

 

PHDs: In order to qualify, (1) the basic points, conclusions and proposals of the thesis shall bear considerable theoretical and practical value; (2) the content of the thesis shall demonstrate that the author has grasped the basic theory and the specifics of the discipline solidly, comprehensively and systematically; (3) the thesis shall demonstrate that the author has developed his/her own research approach and skill, and is able to research independently; (4) the author shall be able to think creatively and shall realize certain academic achievements 5more than 50000 words.
